| Introduction Emperor Basil was a formidable commander of men, a renown leader who had scattered the barbarians and saved Ezria from certain destruction. Now he sought to renew his kingdom's glory by reconquering the lands of the Surud barbarians. Taking Surud would bring gold and renown to his waning kingdom and reopen a vital trade route to the neighboring Survaekom Empire. Forging an alliance with the Survaekom Empire and Jotun Tribe ensured the Surud would be completely outmatched. But the northern tribes would not allow themselves to simply be picked off one by one. King Gervatix II, Chieftain of the Kantach Tribe, has rallied the northern tribes against their ancient enemy. He has pledged his friendship and protection to the Surud Tribe, and rallied armies of Murdoch mercenaries to help push back the invaders. | The Deception Emperor Basil would be known for ages to come as a great strategist and military thinker. Even before launching his invasion of Surud he not only predicted that the Kantach Tribe would oppose him, but that they would do so by invading the exposed cities of his empire while the bulk of his forces besieged Surud. Predicting this, he orchestrated a great deception.
Ezria's army marched publicly to the border of Surud, poised to invade their lands. But rather than remain, his men retreated south by nightfall over three days, leaving behind a skeleton army of horsemen and camp followers to tend great, empty bonfires and pitch vast camps of empty tents. A small force of 20,000 cavalry then pushed forward into Surud, acting as the vanguard for a nonexistent army.
The remaining Ezrian troops pulled back and joined with the Emperor, watching and waiting for the coming Kantach army. They were not disappointed. The Emperor had been at camp scarcely a week when news came that a Kantach force was marching towards Epirus. The enemy was caught!

In Surud, the combined weight of invasion from three sides took its toll. Survaekom Raegar Khaitis lead a great army that marched west into Surud territory, pillaging and destroying as they went. In the south, Jotun tribesmen raided coastal villages, destroying any coastal industry Surud could claim. In the west, a great many skirmishes broke out between Ezrian cavalry and the Kantach warriors.
Too late, the Kantach discovered that the Ezrian army had abandoned its position west of Surud. Their retaliating armies discovered only empty camps and a skeleton crew of cavalry. Now Gervatix II faced a difficult decision: word had come that the Survaekom army had besieged Surud, and the Ezrians are nowhere to be seen. He could turn around now and march back east to relieve the besieged city, hoping that it didn't fall before he arrived. Or, he could march west, abandoning his allies and attempting to assault the now vulnerable Ezrian frontier.

| The Great Battle With the western Kantach army destroyed and Emperor Basil victorious, the way was opened for the Ezrians to strike at the heart of their enemies. Basil's army marched north, pillaging and looting as they went. Kantach tribespeople fled before them, seeking refuge behind the gates of Kurach. But with the advancing Ezrian army it was unclear how long the lightly-garrisoned settlement could hold out.
The Kantach may have been defeated in the west, but in the east King Gervatix II was still a major threat. He marched with a great host to relieve Surud, which was threatened by a massive Survaekom army. Joining the Survaekom were 20,000 Ezrian cavalry, the only force which had remained behind after Basil's ingenious ruse, and a small contingent of Jonten warriors who marched north from the coast, seeking the loot and glory they hoped to find from the sacking of the city. This would be the deciding battle of the war. If Survaek was victorious, Surud would fall, and the Kantach would be unable to defend their homeland from the encroaching armies. If the Kantach prevailed the Survaekom threat would be eliminated, and Gervatix could concentrate on his ancestral enemies: the Ezrians.
While the battle approached, a small contingent of Survaekom marched north from their homeland, moving to cross the river and assault Kando while the Kantach city was undefended. It would take them some time to find a safe ford and reach the city, but their presence put both Kantach towns at risk.
